1973 Plymouth Road Runner GTX

In 1973, just 749 Road Runner GTX's were produced and 414 of them had automatic transmissions. Nearly 16,000 Road Runners were made in that year, so the GTX is a rare bird indeed. The Satellite coupe, the platform on which the Road Runner was built, was the pedestrian version and just under 200,000 of those left the Plymouth plants in '73.

For consignment, a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner GTX with a title verified 118,073 actual miles. And those miles are courtesy of a numbers matching drivetrain. If that's not exciting enough, the car will come with the original window stick and build sheet! Get your speed reading goggles on, because you're going to want to call on this one after reading our honest prose.

Exterior
If you could pull a Marti report on this, (you can't, that's Ford), you might find that there are less than 75 GTX's in this combination that begins with Dark Green Metallic on the exterior, now in two stage coverage and wearing the black transverse strobe stripe. It's more of a blending contrast than a sharp one, but a cool stripe nonetheless. Black appears on the side of the hood bulge as well, where 440 appears under the GTX emblem in fantastic period font. The slightly raked stance of the car puts the butt up high where simple, three part tail lights are embedded in a straight low chrome bumper and machine gun exhaust tips make a grand exit underneath. 15-inch Mopar Rallye wheels, with slightly staggered size tires, fit the corners and hood pins keep things together as those wheels spin. The paint and metalwork are great on the car and we could find no flaws in either.

Interior
Green on green was not uncommon in the car world of 1973 and this green interior starts with vinyl clad doors, fully intact but showing some patina on the armrests in the form of discoloration. To the seats we go where we find tall buckets up front, a fantastic period design of buttons, tufts, and stitching, but both seats here suffer from some significant tears. Let the backseats be your inspiration for restoration because they are near perfect with almost metallic green inserts. A no nonsense steering wheel is up front, just before the faux woodgrain backed instrument cluster and other than the tachometer, a fairly pedestrian configuration presents, all in good shape. Wood grain with a darker grain covers the center console where the T-shifter is situated on the inside of a partition-like rise to the right side, a cue to the passenger that you, the driver, has everything under control, and it's in beautiful condition. Green loop carpet is protected by matching mats, and there is no headliner up above. The trunk has black carpet coverage and a spare.

Drivetrain
Here she is, the numbers matching 440ci V8 rated at 280 net horsepower, fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor, and tied to the numbers matching A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic which sends power to the 8 inch rear with 3.23 gears. Brakes are power assisted and are front discs and rear drums. The bay is clean and original looking and the engine wears Mopar Performance valve covers.

Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with some typical surface rust, residual oil, some grease but no invasive rust or active leaks. The dual exhaust meets Flowmaster mufflers before exiting via some impressive chrome tips. Torsion bar suspension is up front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
The once unloved generation of Road Runners are now seeing more interest and we're out to prove this is a worthy candidate for your next, (or first?), Mopar. The healthy exhaust note fills our receiving bay, and we roll the 440 onto the tarmac where this bird runs the road with more than adequate power underwing, smooth automatic shifts, and acceleration that plants a smile on our face. Our functionality test reveals the reverse lights not working and the turn signals only working if the headlights are off. Good thing drag strips are straight! Meanwhile, all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Lean, mean, and green, this monster version of the Satellite is out of this world! With some minor TLC, this could easily be brought up to the next level, but as is, it's a darn nice car and numbers matching to boot! Your spouse will delight when you say, "Honey, I think we need more greens in our life.". You'll finally put that diet talk to bed, just as you pull up in your kale colored dream. You'll get your vitamins, alright. Vitamins G, T, and X! Not a hard pill to swallow!
